Data report · Snapshot 5 Nov 2026The weekend deadline problem: when AI funding really closes
One in 4 AI grant, fellowship, accelerator and competition deadlines falls on a Saturday or Sunday, when the organiser's help desk is shut and you've got plans. Here's how often, which kinds, and how to stop it costing you an application.
The short version
- About 1 in 4 AI funding deadlines lands on a weekend. Of the 112 open opportunities with a fixed date, 28 close on a Saturday (5) or Sunday (23).
- Sunday is the busiest closing day of the week, with 23 deadlines. Thursday has 11, Saturday 5.
- Competitions and hackathons drive it: 18 of 37 competition deadlines fall on a weekend, 64% of all weekend closes. Fellowships follow (9 of 33); grants almost never (1 of 33).
- The time zone is often missing. 63 of 112 deadline notes name a zone; 49 don't (42 give no time at all).
- AoE deadlines are the latest of all, and 6 of the 6 AoE deadlines we list close at a weekend.
- It's happening now: 20 of the 69 deadlines in the next 30 days fall on a weekend.
Deadlines by day of the week
Every dated deadline, by the day it closes in the organiser's own stated time zone. Weekends highlighted.
112 dated deadlines open on 5 Nov 2026. Rolling (32) and date-to-be-confirmed (21) listings are excluded.
If deadlines were spread evenly, you'd expect two days in seven, about 32, at a weekend. We count 28. The striking part is the shape: almost all of them sit on Sunday (23), not Saturday (5). A Sunday-night close is a week-long event or sprint ending, or an organiser giving you "the whole weekend".
Weekend share by category
| Category | Dated deadlines | On a weekend | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grants | 33 | 1 | 3% |
| Accelerators | 9 | 0 | 0% |
| Compute credits | 0 | 0 | n/a |
| Fellowships | 33 | 9 | 27% |
| Competitions | 37 | 18 | 49% |
Compute credits are almost all rolling, so they have no dated deadlines to count.
Weekend deadlines are mostly a competition habit: hackathons run Friday to Sunday, so submissions close on Sunday night. Fellowships are the next most likely to close at a weekend. Public funders' grant calls close on weekdays, often in office hours (11:00 or 16:00 UK time is common).
Is the time zone stated?
What the deadline notes we record say about the closing time, for the same 112 deadlines.
"Time, no zone" means a clock time with no zone (for example "5:00pm"). See how we classify zones.
Which time zones organisers use
| Zone stated | Deadlines |
|---|---|
| AoE | 6 |
| UK time | 18 |
| US time | 26 |
| CET/CEST | 6 |
| UTC | 1 |
| Other | 6 |
| Any zone stated | 63 |
| No zone stated | 49 |
US time covers ET/EST and PT/PST. "Other" is India (IST), GMT+8 and one platform's own clock.

What this means for applicants
- Submit by Friday. Treat a weekend deadline as a Friday-afternoon one. Portals get slow on the last night, and nobody answers the help email on a Sunday.
- Check the time zone, every time. 44% of the deadline notes we record don't name one. If the page doesn't say, email the organiser on a weekday and ask, or assume the earliest plausible time.
- Know what AoE means. "Anywhere on Earth" is UTC−12: the deadline passes when it's over everywhere. 23:59 AoE on Sunday is 11:59 on Monday in the UK, which feels generous, but don't plan your weekend around it.
- Convert it to your own time. On 62 listings our time-zone line shows the deadline in your local time automatically. Of the 14 weekend deadlines it can convert, 10 actually close on a Monday on UK clocks.
- Set a reminder for the Wednesday before. Every listing has free email reminders and a calendar file, so a Sunday close never sneaks up on you.
How to read these numbers
- This is a snapshot of open listings on 5 Nov 2026, not every AI funding call in the world. It covers what advance.to tracks: 165 open opportunities, 112 with a fixed date.
- The weekday is the day in the organiser's stated zone. A close at 00:00 (12:00 AM) counts as the end of the day before. Your local weekday can differ.
- The time-zone figures measure what our deadline notes record from the organiser's page. Some organisers state the zone somewhere we didn't quote, so read "no zone stated" as "not in the deadline we recorded".
- Counts are small, so a few hackathons can move the percentages. We'll refresh the numbers every quarter. Full details on the methods page.
