The short version
- We collect as little as we can: an email address if you subscribe, and what you type into our forms.
- We never sell your data, and we don't use advertising or tracking cookies or analytics.
- Your shortlist and quiz answers stay in your own browser. We only see them if you sign up for email reminders.
- You can ask us to see, correct or delete anything we hold, at any time.
Who we are

What we collect, why, and for how long
| When you… | What we keep | Why (lawful basis) | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Monday email | Your email address; which form and page you signed up on; your approximate country (worked out by Cloudflare from your connection); the date and time. | To send you the newsletter you asked for. Consent. | Until you unsubscribe. beehiiv stops sending straight away; we clear our own backup copy of unsubscribed addresses at least every 6 months, or sooner if you ask. |
| Email reminders | Your email address; the listings you want reminders for; your Match me answers if you signed up there; your approximate country; when you signed up and confirmed; which reminders we have sent. | To send the reminders and match alerts you asked for. Consent. | Until you unsubscribe, which deletes it straight away. Unconfirmed sign-ups are deleted after 7 days. |
| Submit an opportunity | The listing details you send; your name and email; whether you run it or are tipping us off; your approximate country; the page you used; the date and time. | To check and publish listings, and to reply to you. Legitimate interests. | Up to 24 months, then deleted. Published listing details may stay on the site; your name and email are never published. |
| Contact form | Your name, email, the topic and your message; your approximate country; the page you used; the date and time. | To answer you. Legitimate interests. | Up to 24 months, then deleted. |
| Spam protection | Your IP address, as part of a counter that limits each form to 5 sends per hour. | To stop spam and abuse. Legitimate interests. | Deleted automatically after about an hour. It is not stored with your signup or message. |
We don't ask for more than we need. Optional fields stay optional, and we never add you to the newsletter just because you used a form.
Email reminders and match alerts
Email reminders are optional. If you sign up for them on your shortlist or on Match me, we store your email address, the listings you asked to be reminded about, your Match me answers (if you signed up there), your approximate country, the dates you signed up and confirmed, and which reminders and alerts we have already sent you, so you never get the same one twice.
We use this only to email you 7 days and 1 day before those deadlines, and to tell you when we add a new opportunity that matches your answers. The emails come from reminders@advance.to and are sent through Cloudflare Email Service. We send at most one email a day, and only when there is something to tell you.
Nothing is sent until you confirm by clicking the link in our first email. If you don't confirm, we delete the request after 7 days. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing stops the emails straight away and deletes your reminder record. Lawful basis: consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
Your shortlist and Match me answers
When you save a listing, your shortlist is kept in your browser's local storage on your device. The personal calendar file is made in your browser too. Match me works out your results in your browser, and your answers sit in the page address so you can bookmark or share them. None of this is sent to us unless you sign up for email reminders (see above). To clear it, remove items from your shortlist or clear this site's data in your browser.
International transfers
Some of these providers process data outside the UK, including in the United States. Where they do, the transfer is covered by UK adequacy regulations (such as the UK-US data bridge) or by the standard contractual safeguards approved for UK transfers.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- see a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- have it corrected if it's wrong;
- have it deleted;
- restrict or object to how we use it;
- get it in a portable format;
- withdraw your consent at any time (for the newsletter or email reminders, use the unsubscribe link in any email).
To use any of these, contact us. We'll reply within one month. It's free.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the UK regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Keeping it safe
Everything is sent over HTTPS. Form entries and signups are stored in private Cloudflare storage that only the advance.to team can reach. We keep access to the minimum and delete data when we no longer need it.
Children
advance.to is meant for students, researchers, founders and professionals. It isn't aimed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13.
Other websites
Listings link to organisers' own websites. Their privacy policies apply once you leave advance.to, so please check them before you apply.
